Step-by-Step: How to Graft a Lilac
- Choose the Right Time – Grafting is best done in early spring, when both the rootstock and scion are still dormant.
- Select Rootstock and Scion – Choose a healthy, well-established lilac rootstock and a scion (the part of the plant you want to propagate) that’s about the same diameter as the rootstock.
- Make the Cut – Use a sharp, sterilized knife to make a slanting cut on both the rootstock and scion. The cuts should match up perfectly.
- Join the Scion and Rootstock – Carefully place the scion onto the rootstock, making sure the cambium layers (the green part of the wood) line up perfectly.
- Secure the Graft – Wrap the graft area tightly with grafting tape or a similar material to hold the two parts together.
- Seal and Protect – Apply grafting wax around the graft to prevent moisture loss and protect the graft from infection.
- Care for the Graft – Keep the graft in a humid, shaded environment and ensure it stays well-watered. After a few weeks, check for signs of growth.
Tip: Make sure to choose a strong, healthy scion, as a weak one might fail to take properly.
