How to prune currants?

  1. Remove old branches – Cut out the oldest, darkest branches at the base. These no longer produce much fruit.
  2. Thin out the bush – Remove weak, overcrowded, or damaged branches to improve airflow and light penetration.
  3. Shorten the remaining branches – Trim back long, young shoots to encourage bushier growth and better fruiting.
  4. Keep the best stems – Aim to leave around 8–12 strong branches per bush.

When to Prune Currants?

  • Late winter to early spring (before new growth starts) is the best time.
  • Summer pruning is possible after harvesting to remove weak or diseased stems.
