How to check if your rhododendron will bloom?

  1. Look for flower buds:
    • Rhododendrons form their flower buds in late summer or early fall. These are typically rounder and plumper than leaf buds.
  2. Examine bud health:
    • Healthy flower buds are firm to the touch and intact, with no signs of damage or decay.
  3. Consider last season’s care:
    • Proper feeding and pruning last year influence this year’s blooming. Ensure the plant received enough nutrients and was not over-pruned.
  4. Check sunlight and location:
    • Rhododendrons need bright, indirect light for optimal bloom development. Overly shaded plants may struggle to flower.

Common blooming problems and fixes:

  • No buds formed? Feed your rhododendron with a phosphorus-rich fertilizer to promote flower production.
  • Buds not opening? Ensure proper watering and avoid late frosts, which can damage buds.

Did you know?
Some rhododendron varieties naturally skip a year of blooming, focusing their energy on growth instead. This is called “biennial blooming” and is perfectly normal.
