When to transplant a large Wisteria?
The best time to transplant a large Wisteria is at the beginning of April. However, there are two optimal periods for transplanting:
- March-April (spring), and
- October-November (autumn).
How to train Wisteria to grow as a tree?
Transplanting a large Wisteria can be challenging, as the plant may struggle to adapt. To help it settle more gently, consider training it into a tree form during the transplant. Here’s how:
- Digging with care: Always transplant Wisteria with a root ball. Before moving it, dig around the plant in a radius of about 20 cm (8 inches).
- Pruning side branches: Cut off all side branches that are not part of the main stem.
- Shaping the top: For the upper branches that grow sideways, cut them above a bud, at the height you wish your Wisteria tree to reach.
⚠️ Important tips:
- Patience pays off: About two years after transplanting, Wisteria will begin to produce long top shoots again.
- Regular pruning: During summer, prune these shoots up to twice.
- Save the short shoots: Always leave the short shoots with numerous buds at their bases—this is where most of your beautiful flowers will grow.
