Now, let's delve into the topic of pruning fruit trees and shrubs.
Why do we emphasize pruning? Firstly, not pruning leads to plants becoming overgrown, more prone to diseases, and producing less tasty fruits because sunlight cannot reach every branch of the tree or shrub. So, it's worth pruning.
Start by understanding a few key points:
โ๏ธ Perform pruning no later than mid-March.
โ๏ธ Aim to lead trees horizontally (your back will thank you).
โ๏ธ Apply horticultural balm to tree wounds to protect them from diseases.
โ๏ธ Remember, it's better to prune incorrectly than not to prune at all. Don't be afraid; it will grow back!
โ๏ธ If you have an old fruit tree in your garden, don't give up on it. You can also bring it back to shape. Check our app series "Saving Old Apple Trees," and you'll see for yourself.
โ๏ธ You can also prune young fruit trees, even those not yet branched (cutting the main shoot by 1/3, and also the branching by 1/3). Pruning young trees will make them "take off" faster.
โ๏ธ Pay attention to removing water sprouts; cut suckers correctly (more in the post: "How to correctly cut suckers in fruit trees?").
๐ก๏ธ The ideal temperature for pruning is from -5 to 0 degrees Celsius.
