Typical composition of seedling soil: peat or coconut fiber, compost soil, humus-rich fertile soil.

What does coconut fiber do in soil?

  • Increases air and water retention

  • Improves soil structure

  • Creates favorable conditions for root development

Light peat: Holds water and air very well. Naturally acidic, it is usually neutralized in ready-made mixes (commonly with chalk or dolomite).

Coconut fiber: An increasingly popular ecological alternative. It does not compact as much as peat and absorbs water easily, even after completely drying out.

Want to grow your vegetables and start seedlings yourself?

Seedlings are, simply put, young plants grown from seeds under specially prepared conditions (e.g., at home on a windowsill, in a greenhouse, or a polytunnel) that are transplanted to their final location – in the garden, vegetable bed, or larger pots – once they reach sufficient growth.

If you plan to sow seeds, make sure to use high-quality substrate and a seed treatment (e.g., wood ash, basalt powder, or a ready-made seed treatment).

What do we usually grow from seedlings?

  • Warm-loving vegetables: tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, eggplants, zucchini

  • Brassica vegetables: cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, kale

  • Lettuce, celery, leek
